Daily Quiet Time

It is impossible to reproduce the teaching Rowan gave us here. If you would like more details please feel free to order the DVD by dropping us an email at saintlukeschurch@gmail.com

The following is the gist of what was taught:

We are more privileged than any generation before us in terms of the Bible being available to us through multiple translations and thousands of books, tapes, CD’s and DVD’s of teaching and interpretation of God’s Word. We should be making use of these resources in our quiet times. Especially worship music is a huge blessing for use during quiet time.

Purposes of quiet time

  1. Intimacy: The first purpose is intimacy with God. Our aim is to seek fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ and, having enjoyed this fellowship with Him, to carry it on throughout the day. (See Psalm 119:97 and 1 Thess 5:17) Jesus is our ultimate example of the importance of quiet time (Mark 1:35)
  2. Guidance: In the daily time with the Lord we seek His guidance.
  3. Revelation: We seek His revelation, not only in guidance but also in terms of our understanding of God and our experience of Him.
  4. Growth: As we listen to the Lord in quiet time and as we obey what He tells us we will grow tremendously in our faith. It is not necessary to remember everything we read … just as it is not necessary to remember everything you have eaten in your life. The effect remains in the spirit long after the taste and the memory have faded!!

The basic procedure

This is different for everyone; there is no right and wrong, but we suggest:

  1. Find the best time and place for uninterrupted, focussed time with the Lord.
  2. Spend time adoring the Lord in prayer and worship (singing if appropriate)
  3. Pray for revelation
  4. Read the Bible. This may be in a systematic way or just as you fee led … but Bible reading is absolutely key.
  5. Pray through your day and bring any concerns to the Lord.
  6. Go out into the day determined to maintain the intimacy you have had in your quiet time.
